ProBlogger Networking Tips and MOO competition winners

Networking is always a big topic of discussion in the lead up to ProBlogger Event. Whilst it’s exciting for our attendees to come together ‘offline’, we understand it can be a bit overwhelming.
Last week we put a call out for your best networking tips. We’ve selected the top 5 tips and winners of a $100 voucher with MOO.com.
Getting into the swing of things . . .
“When I’m feeling overwhelmed or nervous at a networking event, I approach other people standing by themselves and/or looking nervous. I have something in common to start the conversation with and time to get to know them without the hustle of the main networking group. Once I’ve met a few people this way I can introduce them to each other when I bump into them later.”

“Find a reason OTHER than networking/introducing yourself to get the conversation started. I like to notice something about them and offer a compliment – a cool necklace, awesome shoes, the fact that they’re drinking red – whatever! I find if I can just make a comment about something to break the ice it makes me a lot more comfortable and makes them a lot more willing to chat. I actually practise this on total strangers too – because really, who doesn’t love hearing a compliment? Even if the conversation doesn’t get much further, you’ve gotten more brave about speaking up and they’ve gotten a nice compliment to make their day brighter. Win/Win. I’ve gone out of my way to notice things about people and compliment them and so many times people just walk away with a bit of a spring in their step.”

“Take selfies with you and the new friends you meet because so many new faces, it’s hard to remember who’s who! Then take a photo of their biz card following) and you can look back and put the name to the face (and a good excuse to tag them on FB and other social media to keep the connection going long after PB is over! CONNECT, SHARE, ENGAGE! Bring it, can’t wait!”

A bonus tip from Michelle!
“If it’s someone you really want to connect with later, as soon as you can escape to the bathroom or somewhere discreet, write a note or two down on their actual business card so that you’ll remember who they are – “talked about pink hair”, “call later to talk about collaborating”, “needs help with marketing” etc etc. I’ve always come home with a stack of cards but no real idea of who was who and my little notes help a ton. I’m crap at remembering names and such so the little cues really help.”
